#NewMusicFriday: What You Need To Hear

Whole Lotta Red – Playboi Carti

Woptober 2 – Gucci Mane

Yesterday was 10/17 but Gucci’s legend status lets him miss an easy marketing move like that. Maybe it would just be too expected or he’s set on a Friday release. The first Woptober dropped in 2016 and was his second post jail drop. This sequel comes after a slew of other releases and like all sequels we’re to see if it’s worth it. Given Gucci’s recent comments about being able to do an album in “one day” and not wanting to “hold the music” are we surprised at his quick output rate? Where are our expectations for this project?

Bad Name – Gang Starr

Family and Loyalty with Cole was a sleeper hit and gave us one of Cole’s best verses this year. This new single also engages the classic duo with the new generation of rappers however this time it’s definently more of a critique. The most interesting part is we will never know when Guru’s verses were recorded but they can still apply today.

Other Drops

First Class – Blueface ft. Gunna

Stacked – Kash Doll

World on Fire – 24HRS

Statue of Limitations – Smoke DZA x Benny The Butcher x Pete Rock

#NewMusicFriday: What You Need To Hear

Another night of variety. Let’s get into it.

Over It – Summer Walker

This is easily the most anticipated album of the night. With an already iconic album cover and a intersting viral interview Summer Walker’s album rollout has been a great one. As the fall approaches music like this sets the tone for the cooler coming months.

uknowhatimsayin¿ – Danny Brown

Sporting a new look and a new show Danny is here to continue his comeback. The singles have been unique both audio and visual wise and the full album should continue the trend. Easily the most unique project out of all the choices we have today

Highest in the Room – Travis Scott

Much like the “Drop AstroWorld” comments that flooded Travis’ mentions last year the “Drop Highest in the Room” ones have taken its place this year. The single has finally arrived along with physical versions with multiple covers and versions to choose from. Many speculate this could be the lead single for a solo project or a compilation project for his label.

Indigo (Extended Edition) – Chris Brown

10 new songs added on to the already 32 track long album.

Euphoria: The Official Score – Labrinth

The soundtrack to the most popular show of the summer has officially arrived. Scored by Labrinth, the sounds and pulses of the show can now be enjoyed and relived anytime you want. Perfect studying/working music

Other Releases

Big Booty – Gucci Mane feat. Meg Thee Stallion

EARFQUAKE (Remix) – Channel Tres

Truth Is – Sabrina Claudio

El Negreeto – Akon

Bandit – Juice WRLD & NBA YoungBoy

Superstar – Majid Jordan

Alone – Dave East feat. Jacquees

#NewMusicFriday: What You Need to Hear

Once again we have a laundry list of releases. However this time around the amount of singles dominates. I can’t get to everything but I can get to the ones you should prioritize.

ZUU – Denzel Curry

Following 2018’s TA13OO which was many people’s AOTY, Curry is already back with another full project. While the last was highly conceptual this one takes Curry back to his Carol City roots. With all featured artists hailing from his home state of Florida, this one is all about Curry paying homage in his own way. Curry has always been one to be versatile so expect gym tracks, smooth tracks and everything in between.

Broke Leg – Tory Lanez feat. Quavo and Tyga

Tory said this would be the Summer Anthem. Personally I believe we as the listeners should bestow the title annually as opposed to the artists telling us. Do you agree with his bold statement?

 Crop Circles – Jon Bellion

The rapper who is a producer and vice versa is a deadly combination. When they put an immense effort into both they’re practically unstoppable. Jon fits this bill perfectly and his behind the scenes videos show how creative he is behind the boards as well as the mic. This one puts that on full display.

Press – Cardi B

The snippet of Cardi playing this one in the studio has been all over our TLs and now the full song is here. Let’s hope it doesn’t suffer from The ZeZe Effect.*

* The ZeZe effect is when a snippet for a song gets everyone hype and then when the song drops we realize we enjoy the snippet more than the full song.

#NewMusicFriday: What You Need To Hear

After we got an abundance of musical blessings last week it looks like the rain isn’t stopping any time soon. Let’s get into it.

Escape From New York – Beast Coast

Albums from groups are in a league all their own. However this project is from a SUPERGROUP, consisting of groups The Underachievers, Flatbush Zombies, and Pro Era for a total of 10 artists. These guys were essentially the soundtrack to my high school career with their solo work so to see them all come together for a full project is a nostalgic dream becoming reality. Before we were all invested in astrology and stones Beast Coast was already telling us to keep our third eye open. Being able to go between conscious rap, mellowed out vibes, hype or straight up gritty tracks is a tough feat but for these guys its simply in their nature to be masters of all of them.

Apollo XXI – Steve Lacy

Steve is the coolest guitarist/singer on the planet. After producing on the Grammy nominated Ego Death before graduating High School and expanding his production resume with credits on projects by Kali Uchis, Ravyn Lenae and of course The Internet themselves it’s safe to say he had a big couple of years. Now we finally get his his debut solo album following his EP like project Steve Lacy’s Demo from 2017. Worth the wait? Absolutely.

Flying Lotus – Flamagra

Some of y’all may not recognize this name. But, you’ll be very familiar once you finish listening. Flying Lotus is a producer but his music goes far beyond a melody and some drums. This project is 27 tracks long KEEP READING and features Anderson .Paak, Solange, Denzel Curry, Tierra Whack and more. There’s a healthy dose of instrumental tracks as well. If you don’t find something up here you like I don’t know what to tell you.

4 Real 4 Real – YG

With a rollout that’s gained mixed reactions YG is here with his latest album. Keeping to his West Coast roots he’s looking to redeem himself after his last project which was not well received by multiple fans. Will he be successful?

All these albums are available on streaming services now!

#NewMusicFriday: WHat You Need to Hear

The “H” is capitalized on purpose. (If you know you know) I know it’s been a MINUTE but I’m back to give y’all what y’all need to hear today. We got multiple releases across a variety of styles this time around so there has to be something in this list you like. If not…

Too Many Gods – A$AP Rocky X Joey Bada$$

I’m aware there are multiple artists on this album. But that Weeknd, SZA and Travis was meh to me. This right here tho? Definitely fire. Ominous production with just enough bounce that you can still nod your head to it. Joey and Rocky both get a verse with Joey on hook duty. The “gods” theme runs throughout the brief track as they both discuss the trials that come with such a status and all the facets that come with it. And for the longtime Rocky listeners, there’s even a pitched down “Uh” tucked in at the very end of the track.

P.S. The Chloe X Halle track “Wolf at Your Door” is also worth peeping as their vocals glide all over the production effortlessly. And it just sounds BEAUTIFUL.

The Last Party – Matt Martians

If you know The Internet you know Matt Martians. If you know The Jet Age of Tomorrow you really know Matt Martians. Matt’s music is a salad bowl of soul, funk, hip hop with a drizzle of raspberry vinaigrette of space. As in the galaxy. This is his sophomore solo album after saying he would never make another one on his debut. This one is special as production comes from a variety of people including Matt himself, his fellow band mates and others yet they all captured his signature sound. If you like The Internet and are ready to get a similar vibe but one from another planet this is the one for you.

CrasH Talk – ScHoolboy Q

This is why I capitalized the “H” in the title today. ScHoolboy Q is back after taking a hiatus to deal with personal issues. “Numb Numb Juice” let us all know he was back with the rawness we love while CHopstix…was CHopstix. This album finds him in usual bag of eerie bangers with a sprinkle of slower paced tracks in the mix as well. Out of all the releases today this one has the most energy and if that’s what you want you’ll find it here.

All of these are available on streaming platforms now!

#NewMusicFriday: What You Need To Hear

First of all, I’d like to say this list might get longer in the hours between me writing and posting this with the way Tory Lanez has been tweeting. Buuut we do have some guranteed releases so let’s get into those first.

Middle Child – J. Cole

Yes, this came out Wednesday but I feel like it being here is just fine because I bet you’re still talking about it. Dreamville appears to be ready to take over 2019 with the compilation album Revenge of the Dreamers 3 and it’s creative promo run and now a single from Cole. In this track Cole talks about how he’s stuck between two generations and he uses not only lyrics but creative production and vocal effects to showcase this as well. There’s also some lines that some have interpreted at as shots at both Kanye AND Pusha T. As with any Cole release it’s a must listen and the conversations that can be had about it will be abundant for sure.

Everything’s For Sale – Boogie

I’m listening to Boogie’s first album as I type this and I have to say I’m mad I slept for so long. This new album however appears to be for people just like me who needed waking up. On it there are features from J.I.D, Eminem and 6LACK which are sure to bring in new listeners. There’s also an emotionally and visually amazing short film that accompanies this album which can be watched here. This album is sure to be packed with emotion, rawness, bars and trademark west coast flavor like his previous work and definitely is not one to miss.

Clear EP – Summer Walker

Summer Walker is one of those R&B artists who’s music is strictly for after 11pm listening. She tweeted a picture of the essentials for her new EP tonight which included wine, incense and candles. She told her fans to reply with their own “Listening Packs” in which similar items were included in addition to plants. weed and Backwoods respectively. Summer said this EP would be of live recordings so while the trademark atmospheric and layered production will be absent, the vocal excellence and relatability will be showcased in full force.

Deebo – The Underachievers

After all these somber projects we’ve also got a BANGER from The Underachievers. This is the second single for their upcoming project The Lords of Flatbush 3. AK and Issa Gold reference the iconic character from Friday on the hook while delivering energetic and aggressive verses as expected. Start your day with this one and you’ll be in the get up and go mood in no time.

All these projects are available on streaming services now.

#NewMusicFriday: What You Need To Hear

What’s good y’all? We’re back for another #NewMusicFriday and let’s hope everyone is able to keep their word this time around.

I Am > I Was – 21 Savage

After apologizing to us via Twitter a few weeks back 21 remembered to drop the album this time. After a leaked tracklist that’s biggest draw was a J. Cole AND Childish Gambino feature we now have the real thing in our hands (well, on our phones) Was it worth the extra wait?

Sremm Christmas – Rae Sremmurd

I’m just as surprised as you are. Ever since Swae Lee dropped the video of him singing the sounds of the season both these songs had to have been in the works. On Christmas night we usually get a surprise release or two and sometimes we get one that was announced ahead of time. However, this one comes a few days before and features each member of the duo on solo tracks titled “Nothing for Christmas” and “Christmas at Swae’s”

Hoodie SZN – A Boogie with the Hoodie

With one of the coolest album covers of the year, A Boogie is back with his signature voice and emotional vocals. After capitalizing on his newfound fame last year it’s time to see the growth and what fame has taught him. Features include Juice WRLD, Young Thug, PnB Rock and more.

Unfair (Full Version) + Been Awhile – 6LACK

6LACK has a little gift for his fans. Like most people his latest album East Atlanta Love Letter started with a short intro to set the tone for his album. When this happens fans usually demand the full version but usually just have to listen to it on repeat to satisfy their need for a longer track. However, 6LACK has decided to give his listeners the full version of the intro and B side as well.

#NewMusicFriday: What You Need To Hear

What’s good y’all? Today we’ve got three new releases. Each one comes from a different generation of rap and each one has a different subject matter. Let’s get into it.

This list contains the 21 Savage album that he pushed back that will now release December 21.

Evil Genius – Gucci Mane

Gucci showed us the tracklist for this album a few months back. He also gave us the release date almost a month ago today and a project dropping when an artist said it will is always appreciated. With production from Southside, Metro and more this looks to be yet another collection of bangers from the East Atlanta Santa. Features come from Quavo, NBA YoungBoy, Kevin Gates and more.

I Am > I Was – 21 Savage

21 has made quite the turnaround. He has bee speaking on financial awareness and had a wealth of great guest verses this year. This project shows us where his head is at now as it’s title already sends a clear message. He’s been teasing solo music all year and now it’s here.

This album is now scheduled to release on December 21.

Everythang’s Corrupt – Ice Cube

Ice Cube is here to give his take on where we are now in America. As a pioneer of protest rap this area is nothing new for him. With striking cover art and song titles this is a project with a message and a timeless one at that. With a wealth of current artists dropping this year Ice Cube seems to be here to show the young ones how it’s done.

#NewMusicFriday: What You Need To Hear

Another Friday is here and it’s stacked as usual. We’ve got things for “real hip hop” fans, things for those who just want to turn up and those who want energy with a message. Let’s get into it.

Some Rap Songs – Earl Sweatshirt

Earl needs no introduction. After a promise of new music on New Year’s Day this year the and only performing new songs at festivals the complex lyricist returned with his third album titled Some Rap Songs. If the cover art is a little shocking to you then the production will only add to that effect. This project sounds like nothing out in the rap world right now. And, people tend to overuse that classification but this project is really in a lane all by itself.

Championships – Meek Mill

Meek is back and he’s got a lot to say. This project will be his first album since being released from prison and we can expect him to delve even more into the issue of prison reform and his new outlook on life on this album. With such a huge year for rap releases it’s only right that Meek adds his name to the list of top level artists that drop. Features on here include Kodak Black, Fabulous, Cardi B, Jeremih and more.

Street Gossip – Lil Baby

“(feat. Lil Baby)” is something you’ve come across multiple times this year. The Atlanta rapper made sure 2018 was his as his debut album catapulted him into the public eye and his collab project with Gunna showed he wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon. This mixtape shows he’ still got more in the tank and features Gucci Mane, Offset, Young Thug and more.

Stokeley – Ski Mask The Slump God

Ski Mask is one the most unique rappers out right now. With a raspy jumpy flow and silly but clever bars it’s hard to ignore any of his verses. While he didn’t have multiple features this year he’s been posting and playing snippets which fans anticipate will be on the project. They’ve been waiting for this project after the elongated legal issues from his last release which plagued it in multiple ways. Features on Stokeley Juice WRLD, Young Thug, Lil Yachty and Lil Baby. If you’re looking for something that’s gonna be fun and still slap, this is the one for you.

Bread EP – The Alchemist

This one is for those of you who are looking for REAL HIP HOP. Over the 4 track project The Alchemist is in charge of all production as soulful samples are a running theme on the album in addition to hard flows and deeper than the surface lyrics. Features here come from Earl Sweatshirt, Black Thought, Westside Gunn and more.

Streams of Thought Vol. 2 – Black Thought x Salaam Remi

The Roots lead vocalist drops the follow up to his solo debut EP with a slightly longer project titled Streams of Thought Vol 2. This one is for those people who love to say “hip-hop is dead” because Black Thought proves this to be 100% false. Rapping over aggressive boom bap sample driven beats Black Thought gets straight to the point with no filler – or filter. This is one of those projects where if your mind wanders for whatever reason you’ll miss a bar – or three. Production on this one comes from the one and only Salaam Remi who has worked with The Fugees, Nas, Miguel and many more so best believe these beats go in allll the way in and compliment Black Thought’s verses almost effortlessly.

All these projects are available on streaming services now!

#NewMusicFriday: What You Need To Hear

This year has been EXCEPTIONAL for Rap and R&B releases. If nobody you listen to dropped this year…who are you listening to?! Anyway we’ve come to another Friday with several new releases. While ALL the drops are not included here, these are the one you should listen to first!

The Underachievers – After The Rain

Brooklyn duo The Underachievers are known for their trailblazing conscious rap and otherworldly bangers. This project however focuses on the former. With production entirely done by jazz duo Brasstracks this project is something you put on when you just want to sit and enjoy the music – and be motivated while doing so.

9th Wonder – 9th Wonder Presents: Jamla Is The Squad II

If you don’t know who 9th Wonder is you’re either too young or probably only know producers with mainstream success. The legendary producer has dropped a sequel to his 2014 album and the feature list is as long as the list of responsibilities we all have. Guests include J.Cole, Rapsody, Big K.R.I.T, J.I.D and many many more. With production on the timeless boom bap soulful smooth side this is something you can’t do anything but nod ya head to – and maybe hit the stank face when a bar or flow smacks you in the face.

Anderson .Paak – WHO R U?

Anderson .Paak is here to bring the bounce once again with the second single titled “WHO R U?” from his album Oxnard. This one is produced by Mell and Dr. Dre himself and features sputtering drums and an undeniable bounce .Paak gives his take on the rap game, relationships and his upbringing as multiple beeps and bops jump in and out of the beat. If you liked the vibe of “Tints” this may not be for you but if you preferred the “Bubblin’” sound then this is exactly what you want.
